Power Outages Empty Power Outages

Post by Bret Metcalf 25th March 2015, 09:29

Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to share some thoughts I have on this.
Power outages are imo not going to stop anytime soon. I took it on myself to bite the bullet and purchase a 1.2kva inverter,(this will keep my PC up & running for at least 2 hours), should get delivery of it either this week or next week. The inverter cost me R4523 (including VAT), very expensive imo however, when I add up the potential cost of replacing my pc components that could get blown when the power goes off (motherboard/graphic's card/RAM etc) I would be facing at least a R10000 bill to replace them (R6000 just for the graphics card alone). So looking at the bigger picture...the expense of R4523 for the inverter is a cost effective one, plus it means I carry on racing when the power goes off and of course not suffer the frustration of days of practice going to waste. Reason why I chose an inverter is because I live in a complex/apartment.

Do any of you have an inverter or maybe a generator?

Regards,
Bret

With the inverter, don't you still need amn UPS\generator?

Hi Gert,
Apparently not, I confirmed this with the supplier. The inverter unit plugs into a normal wall socket, then  you plug in your PC/or extension cable etc into the inverter which has 3 outlet standard plug input sockets. It weighs 35kg and has wheels at the base...will upload a pic when I get it. In essence it performs the same function as a UPS.

They actually delivered it to me last week but one of the outlet sockets was broken in transit so they took it back.

My problem is, I use a dish on my roof which needs power to the POE box. Then we get our signal from a tower that's in town somewhere and they also go off during outages. Wireless has it's downside. Razz

As far as my knowledge goes with an inverter you still need an UPS or genie. Maybe the 1 you got has ups built in.

Although I'm not scheduled for any load shedding, I will try to be online, but a 22:30 start will render me useless the next day :p

But hey, what can we do?

hi Kevin, my load shedding starts at 22:00 till 00:00!!
you say: Racing will start at 10:30pm or as soon as everyone can make it.
this is unacceptable because then i cannot make it.
Rather postpone the racing till next week wednesday then.
or start the race at 8pm as per normal please.

The racing will go ahead at 10:30pm.
It was decided to do this from when the load shedding started. It's also been in the main thread from the start of the series.
According to Eskom, the load shedding is up untill 10:30pm. Where do you live? I can check it for you.

Where do you live?

Marius, I spoke to Cape Town City Council, and although you are in an area that shows load shedding as 22:00-00:30, Eskom confirmed that load shedding today will finish at 22:00. So although you got a schedule, you will not be affected.
Hope we all can be there for the race.

hello,

what is this with load shedding? often in your country?
i do still not realy understand this.

do you people have in this time NO POWER (electricity?) , so no TV watch, no lights, no radio, nothing where electricity is needed, so you people sit in dark house and wait till power comes back???, haha.

or is this only internet which goes dead for any time?

Post by Reinhard Berger 25th March 2015, 23:39

that is crazy kevin,

i am happy that in germany we have always power,
it is become totaly expensive? (opposite of cheap) in last years, since germany try to go away from atompower to green power, but in your country this is very crazy without power sometimes.

i was not thinking this do happen in a country like south afrika.
this must be a realy pain if this do happen.
