WD Denis some great racing. I had issues with consistency & could not keep it together for long.

3rd in the first race was a surprise & overall 2nd fastest lap a big surprise. Tx to Denis for the setup.

Good to see you guys enjoyed the first race with the F3 cars. WD to everyone. Such a pity I could not join you guys as I so much love this track and was on pace during practice with Denis. I am however still having a lovely time at the Knysna Hill climb event.

F3 Series 1 CANADA 16th MAY Empty Re: F3 Series 1 CANADA 16th MAY

All I can say about the races......Disappointed with both.

Race 1
Kept up a fair pace for the first 3 laps, then...hit a wall!!
Drove around and pitted. Took the pits 32 seconds to fit a new wing and off I went again. Managed to get home in 10th place.

Race 2
Got going very well and stayed with the pack for some laps. I did notice that I passed a number of cars off-track and wings and body parts lying in the road.
I made no mistakes and had an 8 second pit stop on lap 9. At that point I was in 7th place.
After leaving the pits, I was down to 10th??
No one else pitted in front of me and I was driving very smooth. A few cars came past minus wings and they were going faster than when they had wings!
You cannot control the car without the front wing in real life and even though I kept a good pace without damage, I come stone last by a minute? Shocked
Something is wrong.

Anyway, thank you to all the drivers that took part and well done to Denis for a great nights driving.
See you all next week

F3 Series 1 CANADA 16th MAY Empty Re: F3 Series 1 CANADA 16th MAY

Post by Denis Mitchell 17th May 2015, 11:12

Glad to hear you having a good time Christo, sorry about your incident on the way there but glad you you are ok and not injured.

What a nights racing...certainly not a easy car and track combo, those curbs...those curbs!!!! Lol...but all in all a good night. Great to have Gert with us again too and well done on the podium in race 1. Dirk showed an amazing increase in race pace for race 2 and its qualifying. Eugene was on pace come race 2 as well...so i have a feeling the next track the times will be a lot closer as the guys get to grips with these cars.

I'll have a look at the replays to see what happens with guys with damage, does sounds weird if they could go faster with damage, certainly i went slower with damage in practice.

A question then, did everyone do a pit stop for tires?

My races...starting pole for both races was great but close for race 2. Race 1 being the first start with these cars i got too much wheel spin and by turn 2 i was third and had to wait for a chance to pass Gustav and then Gert. From then on mistakes from others helped me get away. Race 2 i got a good start and slowing opened a gap up, but saw Dirk challenging early and a slight touch which i think then slowed Dirk and got Dirk involved in a incident. Real shame about that as Dirk was really on it in race 2...hope those pedals are sorted!!! I use Q20 on the pots by the way.

Well done to all, great races...hard but good fun. These races showed some guys are going to be strong this season, like Dirk, Gustav and Gert and of course Eugene. Next race we also get Christo and Ryan so i imagine things are about to get a lot tougher at the front!!!

Well done everyone, also impressive starts for all, considering there is no launch control, and no restarts needed in our first event.

F3 Series 1 CANADA 16th MAY Empty Re: F3 Series 1 CANADA 16th MAY

Post by Dirk 17th May 2015, 12:16

Very much mixed feelings for me. On the one hand I had decent results and found a potential "bug" with my pedals which has been keeping me back, but on the other hand I messed up somebody else's race, and I HATE when that happens. More about that later...

Race1: I was quite despondent after practice for this race because I was around 3s off the pace, with a deficit of 1.3s in the last sector alone, and that sector is basically a hairpin and a straight! I just could not fathom how that was possible, as my lines were good and I wasn't making any obvious mistakes.

I was reasonably pleased, then, if not exactly over the moon with my 5th quali position. In the race I had a reasonable start but ended up braking a little too late into turn1 and spinning it around while rejoining. Luckily I didn't hit anyone, but was stone last. At least it was quite an enjoyable race from there working my way through the pack. I had a very entertaining battle with Chad and Shawn in particular. Thanks, guys! I saw Eugene having a massive incident which took his rear wing off (among many other things, no doubt Very Happy ), and that slowed him just enough for me to at least bring it home in a very relieved 4th.

Race2: During practice and quali for race 2 I noticed on my GID display that my brake was ever so slightly on most of the time. After each corner I could do a quick stomp and release on the pedal, and that would reset it. I did a lap or three like this and my times started tumbling, including that dreaded 1.3s in the last sector! I then set a 5% dead zone in the config, and that seemed to fix it temporarily, at least. I will open 'er up and clean the old pots again, but I can remember from last time that it is quite a mission! I can't help but wonder how much this has affected me in the previous championships I took part in. Can we please do them all over? Laughing

In quali for race 2 I was astonished to find myself in P1 for a while, until Denis of course brought me back down to earth in the dying stages with a lap 3 tenths faster. To add insult to injury Gert then also sneaked ahead of me into 2nd, beating me by 57 thousandths. I swear these guys take pleasure in doing this Wink

Speaking of Gert, that's where my biggest regret (and embarrassment) comes in. On lap 1 of the race I was so excited to be in unfamiliar territory of challenging for the top positions that I got utterly ahead of myself and ran hopelessly out of brakes into the one chicane ...and straight into Gert, causing him to spin around. I offer my unreserved apology to Gert, and I asked Kevin after the race to investigate the incident and penalise me accordingly. It is only fair, as I would certainly also insist on the other guy being penalised if it happened to me.

It's a pity really, because from there I had a really lovely race, bringing it up into a strong 2nd toward the end. But then comes my 2nd regret: I "over-managed" my lead over Eugene in the last laps of the race, and was perhaps overconfident that he wouldn't make up that last 2s, when I took it just a little too easy into the last corner on the last lap to avoid the dreaded wall, and he had a much faster run out of it and stole my 2nd by 1 hundredth! I considered weaving during the run down to the line to keep him behind but that would not be sporting - besides, I had already messed up enough for one race. Well done, Eugene!

In fact, well done to all. This was not an easy track and it punished any mistakes quite harshly. It can only get better from here and I'm looking forward to some close racing.

F3 Series 1 CANADA 16th MAY Empty Re: F3 Series 1 CANADA 16th MAY

Post by gusjacobs 17th May 2015, 22:05

Congrats to Denis on both wins. Excellent driving...again...

I did not had the time to properly prepare and practise for these races, so I am quite happy with a 2nd in Race1 and a 4th in race2. In race 2 I made a schoolboy error when I came out of the pits and that cost me a possible podium. Eugene and I went into the pits at the same time and I came out in front of him which would have been a 2nd or 3rd place on the track depending on where Dirk was, but we was in front of him when we pitted. I was just too aggressive with the cold tyres and I spun on the first corner after the pits Sad I think I could have had a nice dice with Dirk and Eugene till the end had I not made the stupid mistake...

For the races I had to set my wings very high to feel in control of the car and that obviously impacted my topspeed and I lost a lot of time to Denis, Dirk and Eugene on the straights. Although I like the F3's I definitely still don't have a good feel for these cars but hopefully it wil come soon.
